ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini
Last updated · Prices change often; confirm on each tool's site.
Use ChatGPT if you want one all-round assistant with images, voice and the most generous free chat; use Claude for long writing, editing long documents and coding (Claude Code comes with the $20 Pro plan); use Gemini if you live in Gmail, Docs and Drive. The main paid plans all cost about $20 a month, but since October 9, 2026 Gemini's free plan mostly runs on its lighter Flash-Lite model.

Who should pick which
- Pick ChatGPT if you want one app for most things: everyday questions, image creation, voice chats and quick drafts. Its free plan has unlimited text chats, and Go ($8/month) adds more uploads and images but may show ads.
- Pick Claude if most of your work is writing, editing or analyzing long documents, or coding. Pro ($20/month, or $17/month billed yearly) includes Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent.
- Pick Gemini if you work in Gmail, Docs and Drive, or the Google AI Pro bundle (Gemini's Pro model, Gemini in Google apps and 5 TB of storage) is worth $19.99/month to you anyway. For hard questions its free plan is now the weakest of the three.

FAQ
Which is best for writing?
Claude, for long or careful writing and editing, with ChatGPT close behind for short drafts. Both free plans are good enough to test with your own text.
Which is best for coding?
For quick questions, all three work. For an agent that edits your project, Claude Pro includes Claude Code and ChatGPT Plus includes Codex; see our Claude Code vs Codex vs Cursor comparison.
Which has the best free plan?
ChatGPT's, for most people: unlimited text chats plus limited images, voice and uploads. Claude's free plan is strong for writing. Gemini's free plan moved to the lighter Flash-Lite model on October 9, 2026.
Should I pay for more than one?
Usually not. Pay for the one that fits your main task, use the others' free plans for second opinions, and only add a second subscription if you hit its limits every week.
